how to save the bees (and maybe the world?):
an incomplete guide
Hey, Jess here. If you’re anything like me, you’re probably wondering “but what can I do?” You may be feeling grief or rage or powerlessness or all that and more. Me too. The climate crisis is here. It’s happening now. But, maybe it’s foolish stubbornness or maybe it’s purely out of spite, I still have hope. Not the naive hope that we can still reverse climate change, no, we’re too far gone for that. I hope, no I believe, we can come together and we can fight for a future we deserve.
I’ve come to understand that climate action isn’t meant to be done by yourself. While, yes, it is important for us all to adapt to more sustainable lifestyles, it is absolutely crucial for us to be in community, to work collectively towards our goals. Together we can put pressure on our governments, to curtail the top polluters —Big Oil and other companies who are blinded by their corporate greed— we can mitigate the damage, protest and sign petitions, share knowledge, follow the lead of our Indigenous leaders, raise empathetic children, and we can envision a new future.
I have a list of resources below. Please send me an email if you see anything I should add!
URGENT ACTIONS
Stop Bill C-5!
Bill C-5 undermines the democratic process: this would essentially give this and future cabinets unchecked authority to fast track infrastructure projects that they claim are in the ‘national interest’
Bill C-5 bypasses environmental protections: giving them a way to bypass over 13 laws in order to approve their projects
Bill C-5 tramples Indigenous rights
bee-specific actions
Preserve bee habitats
replace lawns with wildflower alternatives or native gardens. Support organizations that build new habitats
Choose bee-friendly plants
Look for native plants that are pollen and nectar rich
Avoid chemical pesticides
Synthetic pesticides, herbicides, and other agrochemicals can harm bees
